History:
Coin-operated parking meters have been a staple of urban infrastructure since their invention in 1935. The first parking meter, installed in Oklahoma City, introduced the concept of paying for parking in public spaces, helping cities manage street parking and generate revenue. By the mid-20th century, parking meters became ubiquitous in city centers, evolving into the familiar single-meter units we know today.
The double parking meter, introduced as a variation to accommodate two parking spaces with a single structure, provided a more cost-effective solution for municipalities while maintaining control over multiple parking spots. These double meters featured two separate dials and coin slots, each responsible for one of the adjacent parking spaces, and became common in busy urban areas. The coin-operated mechanism allowed for easy regulation of parking time, helping to alleviate congestion and ensure that spaces were used efficiently.
